College Research

Choosing the right college is not something that just happens! It takes time and effort to find the right school for you. Use the resources below to help you find some colleges that will fit your needs.

1. FIND YOUR FIT

Think about what you want in a college. What size campus do you want? Where do you want the college to be located? What do you want to study? What types of activities do you want the college to have on campus? There are many things to consider. Katy ISD provides a great new resource called SchooLinks in your MyKaty cloud. Check it out! Big Future and Texas Workforce Commission are also good resources to begin your search.

3. USE YOUR RESOURCES

There are countless resources available to help you in your college search. Talk to your teachers, counselors, family members, and friends about their experiences. Reach out to people working in industries you are considering to ask them about their college experiences and how to prepare for that career. Explore web sites to see which ones feel the most useful for you. Some helpful web sites are linked below.

2. VISIT CAMPUSES

It's hard to imagine yourself on a college campus you've never visited. Visit colleges, and take your parents with you so they can imagine you on the campus as well! Check college web sites to see which dates they plan to have preview weekends and fly-ins. If at all possible, go see the campus in person. If you can't make it to the campus in person, check out virtual campus visits. Most colleges offer virtual tours on their web sites. Another good resource is Campus Reel, previewed below.

4. COMMUNICATE

Where you go to college is a family decision. Yes, you will be the one going to school, so the responsibility for choosing the right school is your's. However, your family is likely to play a big role in this decision as well. Talk with your family early and often. Do your homework and advocate for yourself. Your family needs to understand that you've done the research to determine your best options, and the best way to do this is to talk with them. Planning for College

It's never too early to start planning for college. Set yourself up for success by starting now.

College List Building

During your junior year of high school, you should begin building your college list, or the list of school to which you plan to apply. While there are no rules about how many colleges you should apply to, research does indicate students who apply to a balanced list of schools tend to have more options academically and financially.

Your ideal college will be one that is both a match, meaning your GPA and test scores are about the same as their average admitted student, and a fit, meaning the school offers the programming, majors, extracurriculars, supports, location, financial aid, etc., you desire. In short, your chances of being successful and having a good college experience are best when you go to a school that aligns with your academic abilities, offers what you want, and is affordable. Check out some of the resources below to help you build your college list!

Types of Colleges

There are many types of colleges...so many that there is surely one that is a perfect fit for YOU! Don't limit yourself to only those colleges you've been exposed to because of where you live and who you know. One way to start your college search is to learn about the different types of colleges.
