Types of Financial Aid

Before you dive into your scholarship search, it's important that you understand the different types of financial aid that exist. As the graphic to the right shows, there are four main types of financial aid. To qualify for grants, work study, certain types of loans, and some scholarships, you have to complete the FAFSA or TASFA. Make sure you do this beginning October 1st of your senior year! The earlier you apply, the better because many types of financial aid are first come, first serve.

Scholarships

In addition to completing the financial aid application that is most appropriate for you, applying to scholarships to help fund your college expenses is crucial! Finding and applying to scholarships may feel daunting because there are so many resources out there, but scholarships, whether big or small, can help tremendously.

Creating a resume your freshman year of high school and adding to it each year will help when scholarship application time comes around. Get involved in things you enjoy and work your way into leadership positions. Build relationships with teachers, coaches, and mentors who can write strong letters of recommendation for you. Participate in opportunities outside of school, such as volunteering for a cause you love, going to summer STEM camps, etc. Colleges and those who help fund college want to see who you are, what you care about, and that you love learning!

As you begin your scholarship search, remember to cast a wide net. Apply to as many scholarships as you can on reputable sites. Too often, scholarship money goes unclaimed because no one applied, so APPLY, APPLY, APPLY! While there are scholarships with application deadlines throughout the year and for different grade levels, most scholarship deadlines are in the fall or early spring of your senior year.

Listed below are a few scholarship sites to help you get started.
